Gatsby Fashion: The Glitz and Glamour of the 1920's

There is a reason why we view the 1920's as the golden era and it because, in our time of need, we like to dream of a time of opulence. No era can produce a more luxurious lifestyle than the endless parties and inconspicuous spending of the 20's and the one writer to truly capture the era's essence is no other than F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby may not have been Fitzgerald's greatest novel but very few novels can capture the allure of the golden age as well as its emptiness. So to celebrate the release of yet another Great Gatsby movie, we wanted to go wild and bring you a little bit of moder 20's fashion. But trust me, just like the excess riches of the era, fashion in the spirit of the 1920's does not come cheap.

Nothing excites me about this movie more than the extravagance and glamour that we have come to expect from a Baz Luhrmann film. His signature style is perfect for the era and perfect for a little eye candy. I decided to recreate some of the amazing costumes in the movie for this post because nothing will remind us of the 1920's more than the fashion and Baz Lurhmann just happens to capture it perfectly.

Jay Gatsby
The man who is the pure image of excess. He comes from new money with one dream and one goal and that is to impress the love the he lost. There isn't anything about Gatsby that isn't perfect because to win a darling like Daisy, how you can be any less? Now the Brooks Brothers have given us a chance to own all of Gatsby's beautiful shirts in their new Gatsby Collection.

The Great Gatsby Tuxedo

Nick Carraway
A young writer who is the only to see the culture of the 1920's for what it really is. Nick might not be the most over the top character but he is a character we can all relate to and his clothes are no different.

Daisy Buchanan
Daisy is obviously the epitome of beauty and grace because, at the time, it seems as if that's all women can be prized for; being a beautiful fool. Unfortunately no one has decided to produce a collection of her dresses but we can make due with a Lanvin fur coat and some Valentino heels.

Fanciful headwear, art deco patterns, drop-waist dresses, feathers, beads, fringes etc., the 20's has left us with many unique fashion elements. To tastefully put together a modern day outfit inspired by 1920's or any retro trend, in my opinion, a big no-no is to pile on all the known styles from that era. Because what you want to be is a modern woman with fine taste of fashion, not a time traveller who comes to today straight from back then. My 3 picks below focus on 1 or 2 20's elements, and mix & match them with some modern trends.

Modern Flapper
This look features the dropped waistline and cloche hat from 1920's. Unlike the original 1920's dresses, this dress is very simple – it does not have any fringes, beads or bling-blings. It is just a simple and straightforward design with light-hearted baby blue.

Art Deco with Bold Silhouette
If sporting a bold art deco style geo-graphic print, like this one here, is too much for your daily wear, then jewelry is the easiest way to add a touch of Deco-inspired glam. Put one some neutral-tone loose casual top with wide-legged trousers to create a bold sihoueette first, then leave the rest up to your fringed, detailed, and bold accessories to create the sense of 1920's glamour.

[Oscars Fashion 2013]

Xiang and I both took long and relaxing ski trips over the weekend so, like most of everyone, we watched the Oscars the next day and Hulu was gracious enough to provide a free stream of the ceremony. Can we make this a tradition please? There were a lot of great movies this year so it was hard to decide who would win the top honors but everyone who went home with a statue definitely deserved it. Of course, we can't let this event pass without at least sharing some of our favorite looks from the most fashionable night of the year.

Zoe Saldana
In the my eyes, Zoe Saldana can do no wrong when it comes to fashion and this dress proves it. This Alexis Mabille ombre dress is a little reminiscent of the dress she wore to the Oscars last year but like I said, Zoe Saldana can do no wrong when it comes to fashion.

Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek deserves a mention for being able to make a simple Alexander McQueen dress look so elegant. I'm a big fan of the intricate beading as well as the classic silhouette.

Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington is not someone you see around all that often, but when you do, she makes it count. We loved her in Django Unchained and now we love her in Miu Miu!

Samantha Barks
Not only did she have one of the best dresses but I felt like she had one of the best stage performance dresses as well. We're looking forward to seeing Samantha Barks in a lot more dresses but this Valentino one does the trick.

Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence was definitely the star of the Oscars this year so it's hard to mention the ceremony without mentioning her. Very much like Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong when it comes to red carpet fashion and we adore this Dior dress as well as the back necklace.

Louise Roe
I've never heard of Louise Roe but my, doesn't she look stunning in this tulle Monique Lhuillier dress?

Rock the Coats: Our Favorite Outerwear this Season!

J.Crew 2012 Winter Coats

The colorful pastels and neons of summer seem to have found a home in this year's winter coats! We couldn't resist the temptation of taking advantage of the opportunity to find a coat that pops amongst the crowd and wanted to share some of our favorites with you. Here you'll find a coat for every occasion and more! Hopefully we've covered all the bases to make this winter as warm and cozy as it should be. Let us know how you like our picks!

"Chicago may be the windy city but San Francisco comes in a close second. Since it's windy almost all year long in SF, my favorite coats tend to be leather to block out the wind. Leather jackets can easily accompany casual looks as well as add a bit of edge to a dressy outfit. I also love long coats to keep me warm from head to toe. There's nothing like a long coat to accompany a dress and leggings to a formal occasion but they can also be worn everyday as well. I actually had a chance to try on the short Coach jacket recently and loved it! It matches perfectly with my new Coach purse even if I do prefer a longer jacket. Lastly, since I've lived in Seattle for a bit, I know to always be prepared for rain. Raincoats tend to be synonymous with trenchcoat but I tried to pick a couple others choices to accommodate the classic trench."

"Xiang did a great job covering leather coats so I skipped that category all together and instead, I subconsciously included a coat with leather detailing in almost all of my categories. I mentioned in one of my last posts that leather panels were one of my favorite trends this year and, as you can tell, I really meant it. Every year I never miss an opportunity to hit the slopes so I included some snow jackets that I've been eyeing lately. I don't think I've ever worn a cape but I do think they are incredibly versatile and can look amazing no matter how dressy or casual the outfit. Even though Burberry makes the most perfectly cut jackets, I think my favorite is the long jacket by Club Monaco. For a quarter of the price of a Burberry coat, you get a coat that looks lux with any outfit. "
